Don Bosco – Najafgarh

Archdiocese of New Delhi1984 -
Sts. Peter and Paul

Historical Perspective

The Salesians began the work in Najafgarh in 1984 under the leadership of Fr. E. K. Varghese. At that time, it was a neglected outskirt of Delhi. The small group of Catholics, who had been completely left to themselves was organized and people purchased land to settle down in this part of Delhi. By 1996, the catholic population had grown from a mere 20 families to 200 families and a strong Christian community was built up over the years. In 1996, a beautiful church and the residence were completed. Fr. E. K. Varghese. And Fr. George Malayil did a lot of work in the initial years of the Najafgarh mission to get the parish organized and to build the church.

Since 1997, Fr. Aikarachalil Joseph (A.M) did a wonderful work in organizing the parish further and in building up the Christian community of Najafgarh. In these last few years, a great transformation has come over our Centre at Najafgarh. The greatest change has been in the parish community that has become vibrant and united, working together as one in all the activities of the parish. Numbers of religious communities have been increased recently, and many religious organizations have bought properties to settle in Najafgarh.

The Centre has been very much involved in the life of the people in and around Najafgarh. The construction of the new building for the Vocational Training Institute began in 1999. Fr. A. M. Jose supervised the construction work of the building. It was blessed on 18th March 2001 by Most Rev. Vincent M. Concessao, the Archbishop of New Delhi.

Parish, Vocational Training Centre, Social Outreach

Presently there are over 300 Christian families who are registered in the parish. The Parish Council and Mahila Sangh are actively involved in the parish functions. The young people in the parish have been given responsibilities and leadership through the youth group that is very active. There are regular catechism classes for the children. Retreats, camps and leadership programmes are organized for the youth and children on a regular basis. There is an all night vigil on every First Saturday of the month in which a large number of people participate.

In 1993, Vocational Training classes were begun in Computer, Typing, Tailoring and Spoken English. From July 2002, training for all the trades began in the Institute. They include Computer, Office Management, Tailoring, Knitting, Embroidery, Electrician, Air Conditioning, Beauty Culture, Typing and Short hand, Spoken English, Stenography (English & Hindi).

Most of the trades have been affiliated to National Open School. The courses planned for the future include Electronics and Telecommunication, Advanced Computer Courses, Computer Hardware course, Fashion / Textile designing.

There are over 1000 students in the institute a year. The Salesians and the staff follow up these students and make a Salesian impact on all who attend the institute. We are also thinking of a youth centre where the neighbouring youth can avail the facilities for recreation and also to make use of the premises to learn life skills and to become effective citizens of our country.

The Centre has also been involved in Social outreach programmes in and around Najafgarh such as the Housing project, organization of the Rickshaw pullers, remedial classes organized for the poor children after the regular classes. A tailoring centre for women continues where 25 people are involved in dressmaking. Thus to enhance their family income, many more income generating activities and programmes, are being envisaged for the development and the upliftment of the marginalized. At present 85 students are learning tailoring in 4 centres.
